Directive 2006/66/EC on batteries and accumulators intends to contribute to the protection, preservation and improvement of the quality of the environment by minimising the negative impact of batteries and accumulators and waste batteries and accumulators. It was amended by Directive 2013/56 on cadmium and mercury in batteries.
