Green Claims Directive still lacking clear and proportionate requirements

With the final phase of the negotiations on the EU rules to verify and communicate environmental claims coming up, TIE and other industry associations call on the EU institutions to take the necessary time and not to rush their adoption. A clear text with fair requirements is essential to avoid unnecessary obstacles for businesses in the communication of their sustainability efforts while guaranteeing correct and transparent information to consumers.

The current proposal is overly complex and lacks clarity and proportionate requirements. Without changes, it could:

  • Discourage companies from communicating their sustainability efforts (greenhushing);
  • Shift financial and human resources from sustainability innovation to compliance;
  • Bring legal uncertainty by, for instance, overlapping with other EU legislations;
  • Have companies undergo impractical transition periods and disproportionate requirements, undermining their competitiveness.
