TIE and other 60+ associations warn against the provisional guidelines suggested by the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) for the future EU harmonised waste sorting labels.
According Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), from 12 august 2028, packaging other than transport packaging and packaging part of a deposit and return system shall be labeled by harmonised labels indicating the material composition. Although the JRC is proposing 5 different sets of labels, they are also suggesting to prioritise full-colour labels accompanied by text over monochromatic and non-textual options.
The co-signatories warn that this prioritisation may fragment the EU Single Market and hamper the environmental objectives of the PPWR. In mid-June, TIE defended this very position during the dedicated public consultation.
