TIE, together with 17 European business associations, has co-signed a Joint Statement calling on the European Commission to introduce transitional provisions in the Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition Directive (ECGT).
We fully support the Directive’s goal of tackling greenwashing and strengthening transparency for consumers. But applying the new rules to products already lawfully placed on the market before the Directive’s application would force businesses to relabel, repackage or even destroy millions of products, leading to significant economic and environmental costs and generating unnecessary waste.
That’s why we call for two key steps:
- Allow continued sale of products lawfully placed on the market before the application date.
- Work with industry and stakeholders on a coordinated plan for managing legacy stock sustainably.
We stand ready to work with the policymakers to develop a workable solution that empowers both consumers and businesses in the green transition.
