TIE, together with 70 organisations from across the environmental, consumer, manufacturing, retail, and wholesale sectors, is urging EU policymakers to fix a range of critical flaws in the EU’s online marketplace rules.
Today, online marketplaces are not recognised as economic operators under EU law. This means they have no clear legal responsibility to ensure the safety, compliance, or environmental standards of the products sold through their platforms, even when those products are sold by non-EU sellers and no party can be held accountable. This loophole is enabling a surge of non-compliant and unsafe products – including toys – into the EU market, with minimal oversight or consequences.
We’re calling on the EU to close this and related legal loopholes. Online marketplaces must be held responsible where no other accountable actor exists.
